Your Vocab Word of the Day: Earth-Journey

One of my classes was cancelled because the teacher had a funeral to attend. This introduced me to the word for “funeral,” which is jarðarför. And maybe I have a strange sort of taste, but I thought the compound word rather lovely:

jörð (earth) + för (journey) = jarðarför

A funeral, or earth-journey.

  1. I like the poetical sound of it but journey to where, I wonder? … A hold-over from “pagan” ideas about an afterlife?
Glosbe.com is an on-line dictionary readers might like – no pronunciation, however.
